Hot Water Boilers are everywhere these days. Typically a home will have some form of boiler as a way of heating the air as well as providing hot water for the entire property. The technology has grown and become much more efficient since its inception several decades ago. Homes get a great deal of summer heat for a fraction of what it used to cost to heat the water!

As unbelievable as it may sound, not every home has Hot Water Boilers. Some homes are using outdated technology and they are paying a price to keep it. More and more, older homes are starting to upgrade their technology as governments are offering tax credits to offset the cost of upgrades. For many people, the cost of purchasing, installing and maintaining one of these units can be overwhelming, especially if the property is very large. With tax credits, people can now take advantage of this opportunity, and often find that they save a lot of money so it really pays for itself in just a year.

Some Hot Water Boilers are very expensive; however there are units available that are much cheaper. Some people choose to upgrade from a lower priced unit to a more expensive unit later, because a lower priced unit saves them money. One thing that is very common is that people will upgrade and then withdraw the money saved as if they were still paying their usual high energy bills. They will use the money saved to upgrade to a new technology and repeat the process all over again. Eventually they find themselves with a unit so efficient that they no longer need to upgrade and can now pocket the savings straight away.

Hot Water Boilers come in a huge variety of different set ups, units, even manufacturers. You will also find many different types of boilers within a manufacturer. It helps to know what you need and what type of boiler will suffice. You may not need a high-end unit for your tiny home. If the unit gives off enough heat, it's not a good idea to buy one that puts out more.

Importance of Maintaining Hot Water Boilers

Some people are lucky enough to live in a home that uses an efficient hot water boiler as their source of heat. These were widely used in the extreme Northeast many years ago and some homes still have them today. If you are using a Hot Water Boilers to heat your home then you should know how important regular maintenance is to your system.

Routine Check Up

You will need to schedule regular maintenance checks by a qualified professional. Depending on the system you have in place, this may require annual checkups or once every two or three years. Typically, steam systems require more maintenance than other types of Hot Water Boilers.

Self-Check Ups

You can accomplish some things on your own. Of course, before you attempt any of these procedures, check with a professional. The best time to do this is perhaps during an annual professional check-up.

  • Bleed Air - From time to time you will need to blow out trapped air from your radiators. Every radiator will have a bleed valve and you simply open this valve to let the air out, when the water comes out of the valve the air is completely removed.

  • Pressure- If you are noticing a lack of heat then you may have a water pressure problem. A Hot Water Boilers should run at 12psi and if your gauge is showing low pressure, you will need to add water to the unit.

  • Cleaning- Your heat exchanger and burner may be degraded and need to be cleaned.

Conclusion

Hot Water Boilers provide you with an efficient way to heat your home or business. However, like any type of machinery, it will require maintenance and repair. When using this form of heat, it is important that you understand the system and how to maintain it.
